Abstract

Pediculosis capitis is a head lice infestation that is still commonly found among school-aged children, especially in environments with high residential density such as Islamic boarding schools. This condition can cause intense itching, sleep disturbances, decreased learning concentration, and secondary infections due to scratching. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between attitude, socioeconomic status, and dormitory occupancy density with the incidence of pediculosis capitis among students at Pesantren Al Bahjah Fadhlur Rohman Panongan. This study used an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 52 students who were selected according to the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using questionnaires to assess attitudes and socioeconomic status, as well as direct observation to determine occupancy density and the presence of pediculosis capitis. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analysis with Fisher’s Exact Test. The results showed that the prevalence of pediculosis capitis was 50% (26 of 52 students). The distribution of students’ attitudes showed that 25% had poor attitudes, 40.4% had moderate attitudes, and 34.6% had good attitudes. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between attitude and the incidence of pediculosis capitis (p<0.05). Socioeconomic status was also significantly associated with the incidence of pediculosis capitis (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the relationship between occupancy density and pediculosis capitis could not be statistically analyzed because all respondents were categorized as having inadequate occupancy density. The conclusion of this study indicates that attitudes toward personal hygiene and socioeconomic status are associated with the incidence of pediculosis capitis among students. Therefore, promotive and preventive efforts such as health education and improving personal hygiene behavior are needed to reduce the risk of pediculosis capitis in boarding school environments.
